Texas Congressman Joe Barton (R) inadvertently made the largest contribution of the year to the Democrats’ campaign committees and to President Obama. Single-handedly, he gave audio, video and print copy advertising material to every consultant trying to salvage the reelection hopes of dozens of marginal Democrats.

Here’s what Barton should have said; “If the attorney general of the United States publicly threatened a corporation (or individual) in Texas with criminal indictment and used that threat to negotiate for a civil settlement ($20 billion comes to mind) the chief law enforcement officer could very well could be subject to disbarment or other sanctions under the Texas Rules of Professional Conduct for Attorneys. Mr. Holder acted in an unethical manor and the President of the United States encouraged him to break the rules.” [entire post]

Poll reversals of 40 to 50 points in a matter of months are almost always preceded by public disclosure of scandal (see Sen. John Edwards etc.) but this is not the case with Crist and with at least one other example. Former Senator, (R-KS), Vice Presidential and Presidential candidate, Bob Dole had a very similar political history. In a nutshell, the more voters got to know Dole, the less they liked him.

Most politicians spend their careers trying to get better known by their constituents but guys like Dole and, apparently, Crist do not “wear well” and would actually be better off if they kept a low profile.

The ongoing kerfuffle at the RNC with Chairman Steele and his staffers brings back memories of an earlier time with somewhat similar circumstances. The Political Prophet® remembers when then-Senator Bob Dole (R-Kansas) tricked President Richard Nixon into naming him to the RNC chairmanship. Dole came out of a White House meeting with the President and publicly announced that he had been chosen to chair the committee. Reliable observers said privately that no such thing had happened but that Nixon did not want to publicly repudiate Dole’s claim because the Kansas senator had become the President’s most vocal defender and advocate in the Senate. Fellow Republican, Hugh Scott from Pennsylvania who was certainly no friend of the President was the top man at that time. Not one to be easily sandbagged, the President and his senior political advisors decided they would let Dole take the Chairmanship but in name only. All financial and operating authority was stripped from the office of the Chair and, out of the entire staff of RNC professionals, Dole had hire/fire authority over only one secretary, whose name was Judy, and that was the extent of his power. Who will the leaders and members of the Tea Party Movement rely on to provide the news and information they will depend on for decision making and communications during this election cycle and beyond?

Some Republican leaders, including a few of the “Best and Brightest” like Newt Gingrich, are calling for the repeal of Obamacare even though the President would surely veto any repeal while he is still in office. Obamacare, which features lots of taxes, bureaucratic growth and iron fisted control but very little in the way of real reform and true cost control should not have passed the House. In a rare statement revealing an insight into her secret plans, House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi, blurted out the Democrat’s underlying strategy… “We have to pass the bill so you can find out what is in it.” Setting aside for the moment the incredibly arrogant admission that they were forcing and bribing Congressional Democrats to vote on major legislation without a clue about its contents, the statement provides another insight into the secret strategies which have brought us to this point.
